Biennial motor show returns tomorrow, and it's shaping up to be a big one

Europe's car firms are developing a wave of affordable small EVs to take on aggressive Chinese rivals – and a number of these pivotal newcomers will be unveiled at the Paris motor show, which opens its doors tomorrow.

European motor shows struggled after the Covid-19 pandemic, with the long-running Geneva event axed, the German show moving from Frankfurt to Munich and the Paris show suffering from low attendance.

But there has been a resurgence in recent years as European and Chinese firms vie to showcase their offerings. Last year's Munich show featured a number of crucial debutants and this year's Paris show is looking stronger than it has in years.

While some high-end models will be showcased at Paris, the event's focus is shaping up to be small cars, including EVs that will follow the likes of the Renault Twingo in being priced at well under £20,000.

Leading makers including Audi, Citroën, Dacia, Fiat and Peugeot are all set to stage debuts for important entry-level electric models.

Sure to dominate headlines is the unveiling of the revived Citroën 2CV, plans for which Autocar first revealed early last year.

But other stars include the new Smart #2 city car, the reborn Audi A2, Dacia's new Spring supermini and key concepts from big brands, such as the Renault E-Space and Fiat Multiplay.

Autocar will have a full team in Paris to bring all the stories from the show, and in the build-up you can follow the latest news and updates here.

This is everything to keep an eye out at the 2026 Paris motor show...

Aion GS7

Chinese newcomer Aion will unwrap the GS7, a modified version of sibling brand Trumpchi's S7. A big plug-in hybrid SUV, it's due in the UK next year. It will be joined on the Paris stand by a second new model, the nature of which the brand has yet to confirm.

Alfa Romeo Cuorerosso

Described as a manifesto for Alfa's future, the Cuorerosso – 'red heart' – is set to bring a dramatic shake-up for the look of the brand's future models. Little has been revealed in the run up to the show, but the above picture of its brake lights reminds us of the Lancia Stratos. That can only be a good thing.

Alpine A110

We'll have to wait a little longer to see the next-generation A110 in full, but this sculpture provides our best hint yet at its new styling. Note it sleeker, more aerodynamic shape, as well as its hexagonal front lights.

Alpine 'PS1'

Codenamed 'Projet Spécial 1', this new model will sit outside Alpine's current line-up – its 'everyday' cars, the A290 and A390, as well as its flagship sports car, the A110.

Citroën 2CV

Citroen 2CV teaser

This is the big - but very small - one: following the success of the Renault 5, Citroën is having its own crack at a heritage-infused EV that appeals to both heart and head. CEO Xavier Chardon has said the new Tin Snail will have "exactly the same purpose" as its forebear in post-war France, offering affordable transport for the masses. It will be built in Pomigliano, Italy, with prices promised to start below £15,000. You'll have to wait, though: this year's show car will be a concept, with a production version expected at the 2028 Paris motor show - the 80th anniversary of the original 2CV's debut.

Dacia Spring

Dacia Spring Mk2

The Spring has built a niche for itself as an affordable runabout, but the second-generation car, making its debut at the Paris show, represents a big step up. It will be built in Europe, not China like the Mk1, and it is based on the excellent Renault Twingo.

DS concept

Record-low sales, a shrinking dealer network and a deficit of genuinely competitive products: DS is in trouble. A new concept car, due to be unveiled at the Paris show, could provide the solution.

Fiat Grizzly

Fiat Grizzly

Fiat's biggest model yet is a larger version of the Grande Panda, conceived as a rival for the popular Dacia Bigster. The Grizzly SUV will be available with a choice of electric, hybrid and petrol powertrains, and it will be key to the brand's ambitions as it stages its fightback in Europe.

Stellantis-backed Chinese electric car brand Leapmotor is making waves in Europe. According to the ACEA, Europe's car industry body, the firm sold 56,005 cars in the region during the first half of this year, up by 558% year on year. As a small electric hatchback to rival the Renault 5, the new B03 will play a key role in boosting the already impressive growth.

The Jaecoo 7 is often referred to as the Temu Range Rover; its sibling brand's latest offering could be the Shein Lamborghini Urus. The 4 is making its European debut at the Paris show ahead of its arrival in the UK early next year.

Peugeot concept cars

Two concepts will blaze the trail for Peugeot's seven-car offensive that is due by the end of the decade. One is expected to build on last year's Polygon and preview the replacement for the 208, which is due next year. It's a big moment for the brand as it looks to establish a fresh identity.
