Replacement for the M340i keeps its 3.0-litre straight six but puts out 50bhp and 30lb ft more

The range-topping M350 derivative of the next-generation BMW 3 Series will be significantly more powerful than its M340i predecessor – and it will offer a drift mode for the first time.

Aside from the M3, it will be the only derivative of the 3 Series available with the signature turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, BMW said. It will put out 437bhp and 428lb ft, increases of 50bhp and 30lb ft respectively.

Drive will be sent to all four wheels via the familiar eight-speed automatic gearbox, giving a 0-62mph sprint time of 4.1sec – 0.6sec behind the outgoing M3. It will top out at 155mph.

The addition of a drift mode to the M350 marks a first: the mode was previously exclusive to full-fat M models, such as the M3. The setting sends all of the car’s drive to its rear wheels to more easily muster a slide. However, it will not be available at launch, instead coming as part of a software update due next year.

The M350 will ride on steel suspension as standard, although two types of adaptive damper – one tuned for comfort and the other stiffer, with M branding – will be offered as optional extras. There will also be a staggered sports tyre set-up, with 245mm-wide rubber at the front and 275s at the rear.

The first examples of the new combustion-engined 3 Series will go on sale later this year, following the electric i3. UK deliveries are likely to begin in early 2027.

BMW has yet to confirm whether it will offer a high-performance diesel in a similar vein to the previous M340d. Given the waning popularity of diesel-engined models, as well as the impending arrival of stricter Euro 7 emissions rules, it is unlikely to return. Indeed, the removal of the 'i' suffix on the model badge that previously designated a petrol engine – with 'd' for diesel – suggests the option may already be gone.

Other combustion-engined 3 Series will receive four-cylinder engines. These are expected to be updated versions of the ‘B48’ and ‘B47’ petrol and diesel powerplants offered in the outgoing 3 Series.

The next-generation BMW M3 is due to arrive next year, and, like the regular 3 Series, it will be offered with both petrol and electric power. BMW M boss Frank van Meel recently told Autocar the new EV was the petrol car's "own natural enemy", claiming its quad-motor powertrain will create new opportunities for dynamics.
