The estate version of the Insignia Grand Sport will arrive in the UK this summer after its debut at the Geneva motor show

The first pictures of the Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer have been revealed before the car makes its official debut at the Geneva motor show.

Based on new architecture, this new generation Sports Tourer is 200kg lighter than the model it replaces, and offers 100 litres more boot space. It gets an all-wheel drive system with torque vectoring, as well as a new eight-speed automatic transmission.

It comes with Vauxhall’s latest IntelliLink system with a touchscreen and three rows of buttons, as well as OnStar. The Insignia will offer a new ‘personal assistant’ service that enables the driver or passengers to book a hotel through OnStar. It also gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and wireless phone charging is also available.

It’s available with LED matrix lighting, lane keep assist, head-up display, as well as heated seats in the front and rear, along with a heated windscreen. Vauxhall also says it’s the first model to get an active aluminium bonnet which it says improves pedestrian protection.

The all-wheel drive system uses two electrically controlled multi-plate clutches to replace the rear axle differential. The FlexRide chassis enables drivers to select from standard, sport or tour modes which adjust the dampers, steering, throttle response and gear changes on automatic models. It’s available with a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

As well as luggage capacity increasing, the car is slightly bigger than its predecessor and gets a longer wheelbase. Headroom has increased by 31mm and shoulder-room by 25mm, while you can opt for 40/20/40 folding rear seats, which can be collapsed at the push of a button. The tailgate can also be opened with a kicking motion underneath it, in combination with the keyless entry option.

A sunroof can be added, along with a heated steering wheel and an 18-way adjustable driver’s seat with massage and ventilation functions.

The Sports Tourer accounts for around 20% of all Insignia sales and, like the saloon, pricing for the estate is expected to stick closely to the outgoing model which has a starting price of £20,299. It will go on sale in the summer.

Great improvement, quietly understated

Wow, I think the new Insignia ST looks great and builds on the previous model in the right way to take care of more of the little things. I love that panoramic roof, gives it much more of an MPV / Cross-over stance while keeping its dimensions firmly in the family estate segment.

Forget all the tech it'll have, the massive drop in weight should banish its sluggish fuel economy against the competition and make the running costs much more appealing and a pleasure to own.

Feel that I ought to like it, but don't think it will sell well

The attraction of Commodores and Falcons lay in their Australian manufacture and the jobs created. If you don't want to pay BMW/Audi/MB prices, most will go for a Hyundai or Kia with their long warranties and quality reputation. This Insignia thing is clearly a FWD in its volume sales and 4WD at the top of the range, where it will struggle against proper RWD German cars. This will be perceived as a stretched Astra and, I bet will cost way more than Asian brands.
Nice looking, tho.

Smart

Well proportioned and nicely detailed, this is a handsome car. Vauxhall have done well. Plus being 200kg lighter should do wonders for the ridge, handling and efficiency.
