The new Lincoln MKX has been revealed at the Detroit motor show.
Ford will be hoping the new model will increase Lincoln's presence in the ever-expanding mid-sized premium SUV market. To achieve this, the new version will feature a brace of new technology, equipment upgrades, a more efficient engine and a fresh new look reflecting Lincoln’s current design theme.
Although Lincoln will continue to offer its customers the option of the 3.7-litre V6 petrol used in the previous MKX, the headline engine will be Ford’s new 2.7-litre twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. Despite its smaller capacity, it is reputed to offer 325hp and 370lb ft, which equates to gains of 30bhp and 90lb ft over the larger-capacity V6.
Both engines will be offered with a standard six-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels, with four-wheel drive available as an option.
Lincoln claims the new version will offer big improvements to both ride and handling, thanks to a series of chassis upgrades and the move to a new integral link rear suspension set-up. In addition to this, electronically switchable dampers will allow drivers to select between normal, sport and comfort modes.
New technology to enhance the MKX's safety credentials are set to include 360deg surround-view cameras, LED headlights, auto-hold hand brake and a pre-collision assistance system which can warn the driver of a potential hazard or apply the brakes if it predicts a crash is imminent.
Inside the cabin customers can opt for 22-way electric front seats with massage facility and, in a new brand partnership for Lincoln, a 19-speaker Revel premium audio system . A downloadable smart-phone app is also available, allowing owners to start, lock, unlock and locate their vehicles remotely.
For those that appreciate the personal touch, Lincoln is extending its Black Label customisation programme. A total of four themes are now on offer following the addition of a 1920s fashion theme and a ‘high-energy’ race horse-inspired theme, which add to the existing Modern Heritage and Indulgence styles.
The Lincoln MKX will go on sale in the United States from autumn 2015, with sales in other markets to follow. However, Ford has confirmed there are currently no plans to officially offer the MKX in any of its European markets.
