Move is part of a new dedicated vehicle platform on the retailer's US site; other car makers to follow

Hyundai will sell cars on Amazon from next year as the American firm launches its own dedicated vehicles sales platform.

Launching in the US, the platform will enable manufacturers to list and sell vehicles via amazon.com, with customers buying them almost as they would any other product on the site. These vehicles will be from dealer stock.

The move will start with Hyundai before other brands enter the fold. It comes as part of a new partnership between the US powerhouse and Korean car maker under which Amazon’s Alexa AI assistant will be installed in Hyundai models.

Autocar has contacted Amazon to ask if it will expand the service to outside of the US, specifically to mainland Europe and the UK, and which other brands are in line to join the platform.

Speaking about the tie-up, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company Jaehoon (Jay) Chang said: “Partnering with one of the world’s most customer-centric organisations unlocks incredible opportunities as we continue to expand our portfolio, grow our sales network, transition to electrification and realise the future of smart mobility.

“Hyundai is the first automotive company available for full end-to-end transactions in Amazon’s US store and this is another example of how we continue to push for ways to elevate the customer journey together with our outstanding retail partners.”

The partnership with Amazon also enables Hyundai to use the brand’s AWS cloud-based tech. The car maker will utilise it for research, product engineering and customer engagement.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said: “Hyundai is a very innovative company that shares Amazon’s passion for trying to make customers’ lives better and easier every day.

“Our broad, strategic partnership should do just that, from changing the ease with which customers can buy vehicles online… to enabling Hyundai to transform their customer experiences and business operations by moving to AWS.”
