Tesla has batted off rumours that the Model S will cost above $49,900 when it goes on sale

Tesla says it will keep to its pricing promises for the new Tesla Model S in the US when the car goes on sale next year.

The company has batted off rumours that the electric saloon would carry a higher-than-expected price tag by confirming that the basic version will cost $49,900 (after federal tax credits for EV vehicles) for all the US-based customers who have reserved a Model S.

That’s the price that the company originally stated when the car was first announced in 2009.

In a blog on the Tesla website, George Blankenship, the company’s vice president of worldwide sales, wrote: “There have been a lot of rumours about price increases lately. This pricing ($49,900, the equivalent of about £31,800) will be in effect for all current US reservation holders.

“Due to volatility in currency rates around the world, we are not able to announce pricing outside the United States at this time. We expect to announce pricing about six months prior to the start of deliveries in those areas.”

Blankenship also confirmed that Tesla would offer the Model S with different battery sizes to provide longer ranges. Read our previous story about the Tesla Model S here

“We will also stick to other commitments we made earlier this year regarding delivery of an 85kWh battery in mid-2012, a 60kWh battery about three months later and the 40kWh battery around the end of the year. We are very proud of our battery technology and will offer warranties up to 8 years with unlimited mileage,” he wrote.

The Tesla Model S is expected to reach the UK in right-hand-drive form in mid-2013.
