Surprise unveiling on second day of New York motor show

Subaru has caused a ripple of surprise at the New York motor show by unveiling the new Subaru Outback.

The Outback is roomier than its predecessor, and has an all-new chassis and improved ground clearance.

The new Outback range features a 2.5i model powered by a revised 168bhp 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine.

Buyers have a choice of a new standard six-speed manual transmission, or the Lineartronic CVT.

A new range-topping Outback 3.6R model is powered by a new 252bhp 3.6-litre six-cylinder Boxer engine mated to a five-speed electronic automatic transmission.

Subaru claims that both transmissions help to improve acceleration, response and fuel economy.

Interior volume has been increased by almost eight per cent, even though the car is actually 2.5cm shorter than the outgoing model.

The wheelbase has been increased by 7.1cm, which has been used to improve rear seat legroom by almost 10.1 cms.

The new Outback is 5cm wider to improve passenger comfort and also has more headroom than the previous model.
