First-ever Caparo hits the road

Less than a year ago it was not much more than sketches, a mock-up and a dream, now the F1-inspired Caparo T1 has travelled under its own steam for the first time.

Actually, that's a bit misleading – when we say steam, we obviously mean petrol power, because the T1 uses a bespoke all-aluminium 2.4-litre V8 that produces 480bhp at a heady 10,500rpm.

Attached to the T1's carbonfibre tub, it should produce startling acceleration – the car weighs just 470kgm, and Caparo is claiming 0-60mph in around 2.5sec, and a top speed of 200mph.

The T1 is being built at a factory near Basingstoke; once tests are complete, they hope to build two cars a month. Caparo says that the second prototype will be ready by Christmas, and that the first customer car will be delivered by next Easter.
