Europa 'a car Lotus didn't need to make'

‘The Europa is a car Lotus didn’t need to make’. That’s the verdict of Autocar’s Chris Harris after our first drive of the Norfolk firm’s latest machine.

The Europa is meant to be Lotus’s new GT car, but Harris finds its refinement so lacking that he wonders if it might be a way of using spare Vauxhall VX220 chassis.

Harris feels the car does retain the fluid dynamics Lotus is famed for – it’s ‘agile and fun’. But ‘throttle response is slow’ and the cabin is still low-set enough that ‘skirt-wearers will consider it a potential pant-flashing zone’.

Read Harris’ full verdict here and watch out for this Wednesday’s mag, which puts the Europa up against a rather more competent Lotus – its ethanol-powered Elise.
