Long-wheelbase X1 could preview a seven-seat version of BMW's smallest crossover

A long-wheelbase version of the BMW BMW X1 has been spotted testing, potentially previewing a seven-seat model destined for the European market.

Insiders have long suggested the model would be created to broaden the X1’s appeal and attract customers from the MPV segment, and this prototype suggests it’s not long from reaching the market.

BMW hasn’t released any details, but a longer X1 would likely feature the same range of powertrains as the regular car, which uses four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. A three-cylinder engine could also be added to the line-up later on.

It’d also likely be available in both front and four-wheel-drive layouts.

The Chinese market already has a longer version of the X1, but that car features a different grille and lights. As these spy pictures show, a European long-wheelbase car will retain the regular car’s design.

Although the model is still under development, Autocar understands it is due to be launched later this year.
