Audi has revealed its first S model equipped with a diesel engine, the Audi SQ5 TDI. The car was unveiled as part of the Ingolstadt manufacturer's build-up to tomorrow's Le Mans 24 Hours.
The SQ5 TDI, which is the top model in Audi's recently revised Audi Q5 model series, is powered by a 2967cc, twin-turbo V6 that produces 309bhp and 479lb ft of torque between 1450 and 2800rpm.
The Audi SQ5 TDI, which has permanent quattro four-wheel drive and an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, covers 0-62mph in 5.1sec and goes on to a limited top speed of 155mph. Fuel consumption is a claimed 39mpg on the combined cycle.
Engine components such as the cylinder heads, intake cam shafts, pistons and piston pins have all been optimised for high performance in the SQ5. The sound of the engine is modulated and enhanced by means of a sound actuator in the exhaust system.
Sports suspension lowers the body of the SQ5 by 30mm compared to the standard Q5. It rides on 20in wheels fitted with 255/45 tyres as standard, but 21in wheels are an option.
Cosmetic tweaks include black brake calipers sporting 'S' badges on the front axle. The front end gets a platinum grey single-frame grille with galvanised double bars in an aluminium-look finish, a roof spoiler, modified bumpers and aluminium-look mirror frames. The model will be offered in crystal-effect blue or black paint finishes.
The interior has black trim with power-adjustable sport seats in Nappa leather and Alcantara. Leather upholstery in a choice of four colours is available as an option.
The instrument dials are grey and include a 3D-design S badge and white needles. The pedals and gear shift paddles have an aluminium-look finish. Other interior touches include the S gear lever knob, S badges on the door sill trims, the start button and a specially shaped steering wheel.
The Audi SQ5 TDI will go on sale in the first quarter of 2013, with the UK order book opening in October. Audi UK says the price will be "circa £45,000".
