Sport: McRae back to replace Loeb

Colin McRae is to make a surprise comeback in the World Rally Championship to replace injured series leader Sebastien Loeb.

Loeb needs only a handful of points to secure a third straight crown. But he injured his shoulder during training last week and will miss at least the next round of the series, in Turkey. His team, Kronos Racing, has now confirmed that McRae - who last drove a Citroen Xsara WRC in 2003 - will take his place. He will be reuinted with his old co-driver Nicky Grist on the event.

McRae's role will be to help Kronos in its fight with Ford for the manufacturers' title. But if his return is extended - possible, given the gravity of Loeb's injury - then he could feasibly reclaim the title of the sport's most successful driver.
