An updated version of the Subaru Viziv concept has taken centre stage for the brand at the Tokyo motor show, showcasing the brand's vision for 'enjoyment and peace of mind'.
The Viziv Future Concept features a more pared-back look than last year's Viziv 2 Concept but keeps that car's large, rounded fog lights and aggressive front bumper.
Subaru says it has linked radar sensors and GPS mapping to its camera-based Eyesight system, effectively giving the concept 360-degree crash avoidance capability. The Viziv is said to be capable of autonomous driving on the motorway and autonomous parking.
The Viziv's AWD hybrid powertrain has the same 1.6-litre diesel engine as the Levorg, working in conjunction with an electric motor located at the rear. In the Viziv Concept 2, a single electric motor was used to power the front wheels alongside the engine, while dual motors supplied torque to the rear wheels.
The four-seat cabin, which is accessed via a rear-hinged door arrangement, features a digital instrument cluster and central infotainment screen. A camera system is also used to monitor the driver's alertness.
The first Subaru Viziv concept was revealed at the Tokyo motor show in early 2013, with two updated versions shown in late 2013 and 2014. While not previewing any single car, the concept is instead designed to show how autonomous driving functions might be applied to Subaru's future production models.
Subaru has also showcased a concept previewing the next-generation Impreza in Tokyo.

If the next generation model
Only?
Five year model cycles aren't uncommon these days and it won't be the only model launched 2011 that's being replaced next year.
The Impreza seems fairly competitive compared to say, a Ford Focus 1.0 Titanium at a similar price. Similar real world fuel economy/emissions and pretty well equipped with auto wipes/lights, fog lights, cruise control, rear camera, heated seats etc. It comes with more power, a bigger fuel tank, a very good boot, it can tow half a ton more and it has a 5 year/100,000 mile warranty. Oh, and four wheel drive of course.
I think the Impreza right now is struck between a rock and a hard place. They don't appeal to the value customers because they keep emissions/MPG accurate to real world values so their tax is higher and they're not in the top two or three best handling or most distinctive looking cars so they're fairly far down the list for those customers too. The tax also means they're expensive options on the leasing deals.
Until the tax gets changed for a fairer system Subaru are probably best to continue doing what they're doing and focusing on their more expensive models. Although it would be nice to see an Impreza special editions with some a vibrant colouring for interior and exterior.
