BMW GB boss Helmut Panke has announced that the Mini will never be built outside of the UK. The German company has promised to keep making cars at its Cowley plant in Oxford.
British influence on BMW goes even further, with the manufacture of all of their four-cylinder petrol engines taking place in the Hams Hall factory in the West Midlands. This plant will also start churning out engines for the new 1-series and next generation Mini, whose four-cylinder powerplant is a joint venture with Peugeot/Citroen.
BMW’s reliance on the UK market for the manufacture and sale of Minis hasn’t stopped Dr. Panke from suggesting a British conversion to the Euro. According to Dr. Panke, this would help simplify future transactions and make investment plans in the UK easier.
