The Kitzbühler Alpen Rallye is among a growing number of classic car events that now dominate Europe’s automotive spring calendar.
First held in 1987, it has steadily grown in popularity thanks, in part, to Volkswagen, which has heavily backed and promoted the event in recent years.
The 2014 Kitzbühler Alpen Rallye attracted over 200 entries and a wide range of rare and expensive cars – from a pint-sized 1952 Fiat 500 Bizzarini through to a whopping great Bentley Speed Six from 1928.
As an added attraction, organisers have opened up entries to younger cars, allowing iconic machinery such as an original Audi Quattro and Lamborghini Jarama to be included among this year’s field.
Competitors can compete for honours in one of two classes: Sport and Classic.
Although not in the same league nor tackled quite as competitively as the famed Mille Miglia, the easy-paced three-day event is renowned for its spectacular scenery. The highlight is a stage that takes in the Grossglockner pass - the highest surfaced road in Austria at 2504 metres.
Winding up the side of Austria’s highest mountain, the 29.8-mile toll road takes in no fewer than 36 hairpins as it rises above the clouds. Click through the gallery above to see pictures from this year's event.
