Skoda finds room for the Roomster

Coming from the concept car of 2003, the Roomster will be Skoda's fourth model and a key to their further expansion in the UK. To be shown at Geneva and on sale in the UK from November this year, it will be launched with six engine options: three petrols from 1.2 64bhp three cylinder to 1.6 105bhp; three diesels ranging from the 70bhp 1.4 to the 105bhp 1.9 litre, which should reach around 120mph.

The car seems appropriately named: Skoda's Varioflex rear seat system helps to make the most of the large amounts of space on offer. With the rear seats removed interior space measures around 165cm by 125cm - impressive considering its exterior dimensions. Skoda is defining the car by the space, value and practicality it will offer in a car-based package. Unlike the Renault Kangoo or Citroen Berlingo, the Roomster is based on a new modular platform which uses elements of the Fabia and old and new Octavias.

The Roomster sits in something of a new market niche, between the likes of Vauxhall's Meriva and the Kangoo. Pricing is not settled yet, but the starting price is believed to be around £9,000.
