New-generation green Golf gets 1.6 turbodiesel, 74.3mpg and 99g/km

Volkswagen has released details of its new Golf BlueMotion concept. The eco-hatchback uses a 1.6-litre common-rail diesel engine producing 104bhp and 184lb ft of torque, an identical output to the current 1.9-litre Golf BlueMotion. The new, smaller capacity engine also improves on emissions and economy, achieving 74.3mpg combined and 99g/km of CO2 – figures that beat the current model by 11.5mpg and 20g/km, and match the smaller Polo BlueMotion. As with all of the BlueMotion models, the Golf concept uses improved aerodynamics, revised gear ratios and low-resistance tyres to achieve its green credentials. Performance is reasonable, with 0-62mph covered in 11.3sec and a top speed of 117mph.Though the new VW Golf BlueMotion is officially dubbed a concept, the production car will be almost identical when it goes on sale in summer next year, following the launch of the new Golf in January.Vicky ParrottCome back to Autocar.co.uk tomorrow for our first drive of the Mk6 Volkswagen Golf

Re: Revealed: Mk6 Golf BlueMotion

Here here! Good riddance to the 1.9 PD engine. A class leader at its launch in terms of grunt, but never in terms of refinement. The only reason VW continued with it for so long was probably because they didnt want to admit they got it wrong by not following the 'common-rail' herd. A recent quote summed it up well: "This is an engine whose origins date back in decades rather than years"

Re: Revealed: Mk6 Golf BlueMotion

About time they brought out a smaller displacement diesel. Specs seem mightly similar to the focus econetic (110), although surprisingly more fuel effecient! Let's hope they finally kill the 1.9 PD, it deserves to be let go and not flogged long beyond its useful life like they did with the old 1.9sdi
