Merc's muscle saloon to be offered with stiffer springs and a slippy diff

The diehard horsepower nuts at Mercedes' tuning division AMG have this week decided that the 503bhp E63 just isn't sufficiently hardcore to satisfy their darker automotive appetites.

They've therefore announced a Mercedes first, as far as we can work out - an AMG performance package for a Mercedes AMG – and it promises to turn Merc's flagship E-class saloon into an altogether more fearsome proposition.

As of this March, AMG will be offering anyone who orders a new E63 this additional package, which includes new 18in five-spoke alloy wheels, a firmer version of the car's Airmatic suspension system, a new limited-slip differential with a maximum 40 per cent lock-up and a more ergonomic sports steering wheel wrapped in leather and black alcantara.

These enhancements, says AMG, 'put an accent on the E63's dynamic handling and performance, and enhance its motorsport potential and its individuality.' They should also make the 507bhp E63 a closer match for a BMW M5 over a challenging road.

When we asked Mercedes-Benz UK, a spokesperson told us that MBUK would be offering the performance pack as an optional extra, but wouldn't commit to a price.

It'll cost European buyers a 7,140 Euro premium after tax; that converts to about £4,700 at the current exchange rate, but expect that figure to be subject to a significant mark-up for the UK.
