New 'VTEC' TURBO' engines designed to offer 'class-leading output and economy'; includes downsized 1.0-litre three cylinder and high-output 2.0-litre version

Honda has revealed three new 'VTEC TURBO' engines, which will join its expanding 'Earth Dreams Technology' range.

The new engine line-up comprises a 1.0-litre three cylinder, a 1.5-litre four cylinder and a range-topping 2.0-litre four cylinder.

All benefit from direct fuel injection, Honda's VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system and turbocharging to deliver 'dynamic performance, as well as class-leading output and fuel economy'.

Honda says that the engines are based on an entirely new architecture and, in the case of the 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre engines, feature very low friction levels which aids efficiency.

In the new Honda Civic Type R the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine is reputed to produce 'at least' 300bhp and 295lb ft. This allows the Type R to accelerate from 0-62mph in around 5.8sec and reach a top speed of approximately 160mph.

The new powerplants, together with Honda's new 1.6-litre diesel engine and hybrid technology, will make their way into a number of future global models.

Honda's Earth Dreams Technology is a new series of engines that are designed to deliver a blend of high performance and efficiency. It's claimed that the new technology used in the engines will allow Honda to deliver the best average fuel consumption within three years.

The Honda Civic is an impressive achievement and a worthy rival to the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus, but it isn't quite up to class-leading standards

Ford 1.0 3 cylinder turbo

3 cylinder 1.0 Turbo, remember when Ford started putting them in the Fiesta’s and Focus’s and the forumn ended up with no end of posts about in time it’ll fail, fall to bits blah blah blah. Hopefully Honda following suit will put an end these rubbish posts.
