The driving test is changing to encourage greener driving

The driving test is changing to encourage greener driving. From 3 September, the multiple-choice theory test will quiz candidates on how to minimise their impact on the environment while at the wheel.

Driving instructors have been encouraged to teach more environmentally responsible driving since 2005, but this will be the first time that it has become part of the test.

New questions will ask about ways of reducing fuel use, for example:

Why should a roof rack be removed when it is not in use?

a) It will affect the car's handlingb) It will affect the car's brakingc) It is illegald) It will waste fuel

We're assuming you all got that one. Drivers will also be encouraged to drive more smoothly – long the cornerstone of any decent driver's repertoire – so as to avoid aggressive acceleration and braking.
