New site will tell you the most efficient car to buy. But not the fastest

The Department for Transport is launching a website that promises to help you find the most eco-friendly vehicle.

Developed in conjunction with our sister magazine What Car?, the site uses alphabetical colour-coded ratings like those on domestic appliances. 'A' is the most efficient and 'G' the least.

Go to www.dft.gov.uk/actonco2, input your preferred transmission and fuel types, and the site will tell you which car is most efficient.

Naturally here at Autocar we'd like to have the option of inputting a few more details, such as top speed and acceleration – but even we could be won over by the new website's 'savings calculator'. This works out how much cash you could be saving by picking a more efficient model.

"By choosing the car with the most fuel efficient engine in its class, drivers could reduce their engine CO2 emissions by 24 per cent and potentially save a quarter on fuel costs,’ said spokesman Jim Fitzpatrick.
