Maserati enters the Nurburgring 24 hour

Maserati has announced a two-car entry for the 24 hour Nurburgring race on 17 June.

The factory team will field a GranSport 'Labortorio' and a 'Trofeo' at the race around the infamous Nordschliefe. More than 100 entries will fight over the classic circuit's 14 miles. The 'Laboratorio' is based on the GranSport GT3 raced by Maserati in GT series. It will be raced by Andrea Bertolini, Michael Bartels, Eric Van de Poele and 'gentleman driver' Gianni Giudici.

The other GranSport is closely based on the road-going GranSport, with the changes limited to strengthening the suspension and adapting the fuel supply and refuelling systems.

It will be driven by ex-F1 and Le Mans driver Jacques Laffite, American journalist Patrick Hong, English journalist Richard Meaden and Giudici - it being possible to race in more than one car at the NOrdschliefe race.

As Giorgio Ascanelli, Maserati's Technical Director, says, 'in such a...race it will go through a tough challenge.'

Maserati won the Tourist Tropy at Silverstone last weekend and took victory in the 24 hour race at Spa last year.
