Next BMW X5 spied

BMW is clearly playing it safe with the next generation of its successful X5 4x4 - as these spy shots show, it's planning only mild tweaks to styling.

The new car was caught virtually undisguised in Munich. Even the thin shreds of black tape can't disguise the tidied front end, although it's worth noting that there is no sign of Chris Bangle-inspired 'flame surfacing' along the flanks. One theory might be that BMW is keeping that design trait away from its SUVs and saving it for its Z-model sportscars instead.

There's no word yet on likely engine line-ups for the X5, although there's already been speculation that the twin-turbo engine from the new 3-series coupé might make an appearance. Expect a launch at the end of the year.
